Veterinary Orthotics and Prostheses or V-OP (Veterinary Orthotics & Prostethics). What are?
They are custom-made medical devices, in order to correct or improve a patient's clinical situation. The primary objectives are to recover or improve the load on the injured limb and to establish a balance as close as possible to the patient's physiological state.
Orthosis
Def: “By orthosis we mean a medical device, a brace, orthopedic equipment or the like, used in orthopedics, orthodontics or traumatology in the treatment of certain pathologies. It is an external tool used to help the patient in one of his functions.”
Orthoses must support, guide and stabilize the limb on which they are applied. Our products are all made to measure and are made following the instructions of the Veterinary Doctor, reasoning by objectives and not by pathologies.
However, it is useful to summarize some of the most frequent pathologies for which they are indicated:
Elbow Orthosis: Arthritis, valgus or varus instability, biceps brachii avulsion, hygroma, medial compartment relief.
Carpal Orthosis: hyperextension instability, flexor carpi ulnaris injury, medial-lateral and collateral injury, osteosarcoma, post-operative following arthrodesis, digital flexor injury, neurological positioning control.
Knee Orthosis: medial-lateral and collateral injury, cruciate ligament injury, patellar tendon injury, patellar luxation (I & II).
Tarsus orthosis: Achilles tendon injury, post-operative following arthrodesis, digital flexor injury, hyperextension instability, control neurological positioning.
Prosthetics
Def: “A prosthesis is an artificial device designed to replace a missing part of the body (a limb, an organ or tissue), or to integrate a damaged one”.
Prostheses must replace a portion of a missing limb with the aim of restoring a balance as close as possible to the natural and physiological one. A limb can be missing for various reasons: amputation (trauma, oncology) or for congenital causes with agenesis or congenital anomalies of various kinds.
The assessment of the patient for enrollment as a candidate for exoprosthesis is evaluated by the Referring Physician, reasoning by objectives and not by pathology.
However, it is useful to summarize some of the most frequent situations for which it is possible to successfully create an exo-prosthesis.
Thoracic limb:
- Disarticulation at the level of the carpus-metacarpus
- Radius and Ulna amputation with preservation of at least 50% of the bone;
- Situations different from the previous ones, only after evaluation.
Pelvic limb:
- Disarticulation at the Tarso-Metatarsal level,
- Amputation at Tibia level with preservation of at least 50% of the bone;
- Situations different from the previous ones, only after evaluation.
The natural evolution of PlayCast in the veterinary sector, creating a product with enormous advantages compared to traditional armed bandages:
- Ease of use
- Lightness
- Resistence
- Breathability
- Tailored
In this way it will be possible to monitor the status of the operating site easily, making the application simple as the product is made to measure. But it will also be possible to change the dressing daily, post-operative evaluation and topical and physiotherapy treatments with quick, simple and safe access to the site in question.
Ideal for post-ops involving splinting such as traumatic fractures or arthrodesis.
The Robert-Jones 2.0
Completely rigid orthoses with caudal spout. The goal is to provide support to damaged limbs on different levels, therefore both orthopedic and neurological. Light, mechanically resistant, compatible with all the activities of the animal when walking on simple but also more complex terrains thanks to the choice of Vibram (always compatibly with the existing pathology).
Orthosis structured like our rigid options but which includes one or more joints to accommodate, guide and support the joints of the injured limb.
The choice between static and dynamic orthosis is agreed with the referring veterinary surgeon.
A real innovation introduced by PlayVet. A semi-rigid orthosis that allows the treatment of various neurological and/or orthopedic conditions. A meeting point between the soft fabric brace and the rigid plastic options, always tailored to the patient and the pathology being treated.
A fully rigid prosthesis with a caudal or cranial groove. A custom-made prosthetic recess to allow the stump to support the patient's weight in the best possible way and restoring a gait as close as possible to the natural and physiological one.
Every day we learn from patients and partner colleagues in order to update our manufacturing algorithm to create increasingly correct, functional and innovative products.

Caudal or cranial shower, always made to measure, allows the stump to better support the patient's weight, restoring a gait as close as possible to the natural and physiological one.

Our solutions for supporting ambulation on wheels are varied and are developed from time to time on the needs of the clinical case in question. We have already developed and successfully produced the following applications:
- Toracic limbs walking support.
- Pelvic limbs walking support.
